Varve Project News
Varve Paleontology, Summer 2007 |

From left to right are RJ Knecht, Jake Benner, Emily Voytek, and Catherine Beck. After core collection in the early summer of 2007, field work focused on the collection of plant fossils in varves at Newbury, Wells River, and the Passumpsic Valley in northern Vermont. The plant fossils will provide information on the types of vegetation surrounding the glacial lakes of the upper Connecticut Valley. The plant fossils will also provide radiocarbon ages for calibrating the varves sequences. As you can see below, collecting fossils from clayey lake beds can be dirty work involving lots of shoveling. |
